- This program was made possible through a generous grant from the Calgary Foundation to enable us to help more families with sick or injured pets, and with generous contributions from other donors and sponsors WE ARE ABLE TO OFFER THIS PROGRAM THROUGHOUT ALL OF ALBERTA.
HOW THE “ TAILS OF HELP PETS & VETS PROGRAM 2023″ WORKS:
- “ TAILS OF HELP PETS & VETS PROGRAM 2023″ is temporary, to run for a limited time
Now EXTENDED October 1 – December 31 while funding lasts!

During this limited time, each doctor can use our program to provide aid for more patients. - Complete the standard Tails of Help application form to access this program.
Pet owners can qualify by financial need if they receive AISH, GIS, Alberta Works, etc
OR if their family is suffering job loss or reduced hours/income due to layoffs, illness, injury, work shortages… - This program provides a temporary “freeze” (or suspension) of our annual application limits for veterinarians.
- Applications submitted during July, August and September will not count toward our normal $1000 annual limit per veterinarian.
During this limited time, veterinarians may submit multiple additional applications for up to $1000 each, even if they have used their 2023 funding allocation already. - The annual limit of $1000 for any pet/owner/family still applies.
- Other standard criteria for Tails of Help applications are still in effect as found elsewhere on this web page.
- For all veterinary practices, we normally have an annual funding limit of $10,000. Any practice will be permitted to submit applications during Jul/Aug/Sept up to a limit of an additional $10,000 that will not affect their standard annual funding allocation. Applications submitted during July, August and September will not affect the $1000 annual limit per veterinarian.

- Either a photo supplied by the pet owner, or taken in the clinic with a cell phone or tablet.
- Please submit pet photos in JPG or PDF format by email with the rest of the application documents.
THIS PET PHOTO IS NOT MANDATORY FOR APPLICATION APPROVAL, AND DOES NOT AFFECT APPROVAL DECISIONS FOR APPLICATIONS.

Please note that the Owner Financial Need Form already requires the pet owner signature giving permission to use photos of the pet for this purpose.
You will find information about the pet photo request in the current version of our Funding Process Document. (To view this document, please click here. Please note that ABVMA member login is required to access application documents.)
HOW CAN WE HELP?
Veterinarians are often faced with tragic situations where pets are surrendered or euthanized because of financial distress. Clinics provide significant pro bono services, but cannot bear the entire burden alone.
Tails of Help is dedicated to providing financial support to qualified pet owners who find themselves in need of essential veterinary care. Applications for funding are made on behalf of eligible pet owners by participating Alberta veterinary clinics, and rely on veterinarian recommendation of both the animal and the owner for the program.
Any financial support from Tails of Help is supplied directly to the treating veterinary practice entity. Owners are expected to make some financial contribution to the treatment of their animal.
- Qualifying criteria for owners and for patients can be found here
- Application Form to submit a case can be found here
